Children's wellies are handed out to kids at a nursery in the East Midlands whenever they work with water in the garden.

Nottingham Nursery School (NNS) has been highlighted by the Independent for its novel approach to childcare, which involves allowing little ones to take risks in order to learn.

While many similar establishments are too concerned about health and safety to let children get their hands dirty, NNS believes that it is important not to mollycoddle kids when teaching them about science.

Therefore there are lessons in making mud pies and hammering nails, along with old favourites such as story time.

Headteacher Jill Robey explained: "Whatever children do they're going to fall, they're going to get bumps, they're going to get cut. With the best will in the world, you can't make sure they're protected from that."

Youngsters may also need children's wellies if they are planning to attend a music event with their parents this summer - V Festival is set to take place in Essex and Staffordshire next month.

The Reading and Leeds Festival is also due to be held on the August bank holiday weekend (August 27th to 29th 2010).
