Walking through Bristol at any time of year and you will notice people cycling and bicycles attached to the many bike racks throughout the city. As well as being an ecologically sustainable mode of transport, a subject that is very important, it is also a great way to explore the local area that you live.

We are very fortunate to live and work in the UK’s first official cycling city. As such we have many cycle routes available, from exploring Bristol, to having a break from urban living and enjoying the beautiful countryside. Cycling as a family may seem daunting, with the prospect of keeping small children safe on our busy roads and concerns of pollution. There are however many cycle routes available that are ideal for cycling as a family.

The Strawberry Line is one such route. Just fourteen miles from Bristol, this former railway line, so named due to the delicious cargo from the strawberry fields at Cheddar, starts from Yatton and continues for fifteen miles to Cheddar Gorge. This route is mainly traffic free and without any steep gradients, and as such is ideal for cycling with younger cyclists or a trailer. Strawberry Line is currently in the process of being restored by volunteers and community projects with the overall aim as part of the Safe Paths For All Campaign, to eventually reopen the entire length from Clevedon to Cranmore. Detailed information regarding this route and many others throughout the UK, together with a route map, is available to download for free from the charitable organisation Sustrans , together with tips and advice on cycling with children, including information on purchasing the correct bicycle for the age of your child.

As with any day out with children, it is important to pack for all eventualities, so remember to pack plenty of refreshments, the kids waterproofs and sun cream. A picnic lunch would be pleasant as well, although there is a charming community cafe, The Strawberry Line Cafe , at Yatton Railway Station offering a varied menu including a new range of omelettes, paninis and homemade burgers and an affordable children’s menu.

Most importantly have fun!
