Families could take their beach tents to Crete as it boasts some beautiful coastline.

According to holiday firm cheapflights.co.uk, many travellers are drawn in by the chance to enjoy some much-needed relaxtion on the Greek island.

However, spokesperson Nadine Hallack said there is much more to the destination than sun and sand and recommended experiencing local culture.

Visitors to the island's capital Heraklion should check out the Samaria Gorge, the Matala Caves and the Arhane Village.

"The food is outstanding and the people are very kind - it's worth hiring a car to explore the island and experience Crete away from its beaches," Mr Hallack remarked.

More families may be packing up their beach tents and heading on holiday following England's early exit from the World Cup last month.

Travel portal TripAdvisor recorded a 41 per cent increase in searches for holidays the day after (June 27th 2010) the Three Lions' 4-1 loss to Germany.
