As many parents know, children need praise to develop, whether they have got dressed themselves in their children's winter clothing or moved on from baby changing bags to the potty.

However, mums and dads should be careful not to lavish too many superlatives on their tots, according to comedian and actor Jerry Seinfeld.

He told Parade magazine that praise is one of his "poison Ps", the three rules he and wife Jessica base their parenting style on with their kids Sascha, Julian Kai and Shepherd Kellen, who are aged between four and nine.

The other two rules are problem-solving - something Seinfeld reckons kids do not get the chance to do enough - and pleasure, which many parents give to their offspring too often.

"Kids are not going to do what you tell them to do or think like you tell them to think,” he explained.

Seinfeld is best known for playing the title role in his own sitcom and appearing in shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm.ADNFCR-3005-ID-19615325-ADNFCR
