Although most youngsters are unlikely to be concerned with choosing their own swimming armbands or buoyancy aids, involving children when buying kids swimwear can be important.

This is according to Prima Baby magazine, which pointed out that toddlers are more likely to get changed without a fuss if they have picked out their own outfit.

Features editor Georgina Wintersgill explained this theory can be applied to all areas of the wardrobe, adding it can teach youngsters about practicality and which children's clothes are worn at different times of the year.

"With toddler age children it can be a bit of a flash point getting them dressed … [so] it's really important to make them feel involved," she remarked.

Ms Wintersgill's comments follow recent research by Mintel, which revealed 18 per cent of shoppers allow their kids to choose their own children's clothing.

Over one in five (22 per cent) of parents have the final say when it comes to purchasing new garments for youngsters.ADNFCR-3005-ID-19628248-ADNFCR
