The sign of a first tooth can herald many things for a parent - more washing of all in one baby suits due to messier meal times being just one.

However, mums and dads have been reminded of their responsibilities once their little one's first peg pops through with regard to brushing.

Writing for the Irish Independent, Grainne Ryan said it is important to clean a tooth as soon as it appears, at the same times adults would - bedtime and first thing in the morning.

Toothpaste should not be used until the tot is at least two years old and parents should use a small brush or soft cloth.

She suggested bringing a child round to the positives of brushing may take some work, meaning parents could need to come up with games or songs.

Ms Ryan remarked: "The important thing at the start is to get teeth brushing accepted as part of the everyday routine. Good dental habits that begin early in life can keep teeth strong and healthy and provide a good start for adult teeth."

The NHS recommends that parents do not worry if their kids do not develop adult teeth at the age they expect, as every child is different.ADNFCR-3005-ID-19577908-ADNFCR
