Pupils at Carr Infants School love nothing more than getting on their kids' raincoats and children's wellies and heading into a woodland garden.

The youngsters have spent the past couple of years getting their hands dirty as part of the project, which has involved making dens and planting greenery.

In recognition of their handiwork, headteacher Sue Bell has put the garden forward for York news source the Press' Community Pride Awards.

The school is hoping to win the Best Primary School category at the ceremony, which is due to take place later this year.

Regardless of whether the kids pick up a gong for the garden, it is proving to be useful for lessons across the curriculum, including art, geography and technology, Ms Bell explained.

She remarked: "The children love it. We have raincoats and wellies and go out in all weathers. Everyone is on board."

Earlier this month, parenting website MyChild.co.uk suggested that little ones could get on children's wellies and create their own nature garden this summer.
