Although England may not offer the temperatures of holiday destinations nearer the equator, families may still need to pack sun protection for toddlers if they choose a staycation this year.

Tourism authority VisitEngland has pointed out that England is home to some of the world's best beaches - which could be worth a visit with forecasters predicting "ice cream weather" this year.

Chief executive James Berresford said the surf reef in Bournemouth proved particularly attractive in 2009 - and predicted more Brits will choose to take a vacation on home soil this year.

"Last summer trips to the seaside were up 24 per cent and it's not surprising when you have fantastic new attractions and facilities on offer," he remarked, citing the Grand Tour bikeathon as a notable event.

Earlier this month, anti-litter charity Keep Britain Tidy highlighted 150 UK beaches which offer high standards and facilities.

Families may decide to take their sun protection for toddlers to the Isle of Wight or Torbay, as beaches in these areas received 14 awards each.

Scarborough, Thanet, Southend-on-Sea and East Riding of Yorkshire were also commended by the non-profit body.
