Families could decide to pack up their child rollalong suitcases and enjoy a flight-free holiday this summer.

Although travel problems caused by volcanic ash appear to have cleared, there is no guarantee that this will remain the case throughout the summer months.

According to the Sunday Times, a good tactic could be to avoid planes entirely this summer.

It underlined how destinations across the continent are accessible using ferries and coaches.

Columnist Rob Ryan recommended heading to St Jean de Luz in south-west France, explaining that its stunning beaches and excellent eateries can be reached by a mixture of rail and ferries.

Cantabria in Spain could also be worth a look for those who enjoy marvelling at modern architecture.

"Who needs to fly? Not us. Let the others take a chance with moody volcanoes and strike-happy unions," Mr Ryan remarked.

Last month, the Plymouth Herald offered food for thought to those considering taking their child rollalong suitcases on a staycation this year.

It recommended visiting the Longleat branch of Center Parcs, where youngsters can try out their kids' swimwear in numerous indoor pools.
