Just because a parent uses child reins to keep their youngster safe does not mean they cannot have fun - and dressing up is a great way to put a smile on a kid's face.

According to Sally Reynolds, spokeswoman for Legoland, dressing children up as their favourite superheroes is a great way to ensure they burn lots of energy.

David Stringer, head of wardrobe on West End show Legally Blonde, added costumes can usually be made from items found lying round the house.

For example, a pirate costume can be created using old torn clothes and items found in the recycling bin.

"I always find the best fancy dress costumes aren't necessarily the most polished, but the ones that have got a bit of creativity and imagination put into them," he said.

Ms Reynolds and Mr Stringer were commenting in the wake of research carried out by the organisers of National Family Week.

It was found 77 per cent of parents believe a day out at a theme park is a great way to spend quality time with their kids.

These types of trips may require mums and dads to stock up on child reins, sun protection for toddlers and children's backpacks this summer.
