Families who like to educate their kids while soaking up the sun should pack up the children's travel suitcases and head for Malta.

The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has underlined how the Mediterranean island gets 300 days of sunshine every year, meaning it is a perfect destination for those looking to top up their tan.

However, families who head to the hotspot will also be wowed by the culture of the island, as there are 7,000 years of history to explore.

UK and Ireland director of MTA Alex Incorvaja said the island is trying to attract more travellers taking weekend breaks this year.

"Malta is just three hours away from England. The weekend break tied in with a variety of restaurants and cuisines of typical Mediterranean with a Maltese slant is just another attraction in itself," he remarked.

The authority hopes the fact Ryanair has opened two new routes to the island from UK airports in Bournemouth and Leeds-Bradford this year will boost tourist numbers.

Easyjet is also adding a service at John Lennon Airport in June 2010, while East Midlands Airport passengers will be able to take a BMI Baby flight from May 29th.
