The British Skin Foundation has reminded travellers of the dangers of the sun with the holiday season fast approaching, underlining how precautions must be taken whether people are going abroad or staying in the UK.

Communications and press officer Bevis Man said many Britons are aware of the dangers of exposing themselves to the sun, but often choose to ignore health warnings.

For this reason there is a "long way to go" in raising awareness of sun safety.

He remarked: "There is no substitute for the combination of loose clothing, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and shade in addition to wearing appropriately strong sunscreen."

Earlier this month, Cancer Research UK launched its 2010 SunSmart campaign.

A study carried out by the non-profit body found incidences of melanoma among people of all ages have quadrupled in the UK since the 1970s.
