The typical image of a family holiday could involve kids packing up child rollalong suitcases and heading away with their mum and dad.

However, a holiday park firm has noted a trend for grandparents taking youngsters on a vacation instead, according to the Lowestoft Journal.

Close to one in five spring holidays taken at Haven Holidays villages in the area involved grandparents and grandchildren.

The company suggested elderly members of the family are looking to treat their little ones with a bit of time away.

A spokesman told the news provider: "The parks are an ideal self-contained environment for youngsters to learn greater independence. Many families feel they offer a great deal of peace of mind."

MSNBC travel editor Peter Greenberg has previously offered tips on "grandtravel" - the term for children travelling with grandparents.

He said it is important for parents to set rules and that kids must be 100 per cent happy with the situation before setting off.
