Getting tots in their toddler swimwear and taking them to the pool provides them with a great mental and physical workout.

According to lesson organiser Phil Shaw, there is a growing trend for teaching babies to swim.

He has seen a huge increase in interest for his swimming school in Osterley, west London - 500 kids have been signed up this summer compared to 85 in 2008.

His classes comprise up to eight babies and involve parents while the children become acclimatised to water.

Tots as young as six weeks old have had great fun splashing about in the pool during the sessions.

"With our swimming lessons, we are helping babies to make new brain connections and strengthen learning through skills and stimulation," Mr Shaw told the Metro.

Earlier this year, the Evening News 24 reported on a happy little water baby taking part in sessions in Norwich.

Jake McDonald has been attending the Water Babies sessions since he was 16 days old.
