There are some varied flavours of ice cream out there, but kids in children's swimwear at Southport this week got a surprise when they were asked to road-test some new ones.

An ice cream van drew up on the beach as part of the Southport Food and Drink Festival and asked a team of youngsters to try tomato and basil and spring asparagus varieties under blind taste tests.

However, the Daily Mail reports that the children were unimpressed, with one proclaiming they were "disgusting" and another saying the taste was a "big shock".

Despite their initial reservations, the group chose the asparagus flavor as the one which is to represent the festival.

Sefton Council spokesperson Sarah Carter said: "It would be great to see … if we can get them to eat more vegetables, even if it is through ice cream!"

Earlier this month, Ian Marber, founder of the Food Doctor, urged mums to mix fruit into yoghurts and compotes to help kids get their five a day.
