It may sometimes be difficult to persuade little ones in travel high chairs to eat up their fruit and veg, but one expert has suggested a few sneaky techniques to help parents out.

Ian Marber, founder of the Food Doctor, pointed out that while brightly-coloured fruits may be appealing to toddlers, the more boring-looking ones could end up left in lunchboxes at the end of a trip out.

However, by being creative, mums and dads could find new ways to incorporate healthy foods into their child's diet and promote healthy eating later in life.

"Purees and compotes work well, as does mixing fresh fruit into yoghurts," he pointed out.

You could also opt for the classic technique of mixing veg like swede into mashed potato or fruit into cereals in order to help toddlers get their five a day.

This follows recent research by Maastricht University, which showed that children prefer healthy food if it is presented in a way that appeals to the eye.
