Dummies can be a useful aid for mums trying to get their babies to sleep in travel cots, it has been suggested.

Dr Carol Cooper, writing for the Sun, said that this kind of comforter can help children to settle in different environments, or when they are crying excessively.

The GP added that they could be especially useful for parents of twins, who struggle to reassure two babies at the same time, and revealed that both of her children used dummies at one point.

However, it was suggested that mothers wean babies off dummies before they are a year old, as prolonged use could lead to problems with their teeth.

BBC Health also recommends this, as well as not using dummies for the first month if you're breastfeeding.

To wean one-year-olds off them, it suggests presenting the child with something more grown up and carrying out a "ritual" of throwing them away.
