Along with getting used to dressing their new tots in all in one suits, feeding is one of the most important aspects about learning to be a new parent.

According to expert Janet Fyle, it is imperative for a baby's health that they are breastfed from birth.

She is midwifery advisor at the Royal College of Midwives and pointed out those who are exclusively fed their mother's milk are less likely to be admitted to hospital for illnesses than those who are given formula milk.

Chest infections, gastroenteritis and middle-ear infection are among the illnesses that tots can be more susceptible to if they are given synthetic milk, she suggested.

Ms Fyle said the key to ensuring more women breastfeed is offering as much support as possible when it is needed.

"When they have problems they need people who have the knowledge to be able to advise and support them," she remarked.

Earlier this year, a study published in the American Journal of Physiology, Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology found that breastmilk improves a tot's gene function and wards off infant illnesses.
