Whether kids are still in all one baby suits or wearing children's clothing, reading to them is important.

This is according to child psychologist Dr Richard Woolfson, who said it is encouraging that 75 per cent of mums and dads read stories to their kids.

The spokesperson for chilled snack firm Munch Bunch was commenting as the favourite kids' stories of all time were revealed.

Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar came out on top, followed by The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis, AA Milne's Winnie the Pooh and Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo.

Roald Dahl also featured prominently in the list, with Matilda (fifth), The Witches (13th), The Twits (14th) and James and the Giant Peach (15th) all cited by the 4,000 parents polled to coincide with the recent World Book Day.

Dr Woolfson remarked: "'It's fantastic to see that the traditional stories that so many of us have grown up with are still as popular today as they ever were."

TV presenter Gail Porter has previously supported Munch Bunch and its Story Telling Campaign, stating she loves to read to her daughter.
